HSA vs FSA, What Is Best For You

HSA vs FSA, What Is Best For You

Welcome back! In our last article, we talked about how FSAs and HSAs are like "Health Vaults" that save you money on taxes. This month, we’re putting them head-to-head so you can understand exactly how to use yours at Junkyard Training. Whether you're self-employed or a corporate rockstar, knowing the rules of your plan helps you maximize your rehab and recovery time with us!

The Head-to-Head Comparison

Feature HSA (Health Savings Account) FSA (Flexible Spending Account)
Eligibility Employees (High deductible) & Self-Employed. Employees only (Any deductible).
Who Owns It? You! It stays with you if you leave your job. Your Employer.
Rollover? Yes! Money rolls over year after year. No. Usually "use it or lose it."
Access to Funds Available as you deposit them. Full annual amount available on Day 1!
Changes Change contributions anytime. Generally no changes during the year.
Contribution Caps Individ: $3,550 / Family: $7,100 (2020 refs) $2,750 (2020 ref)

A Closer Look at the HSA

The HSA is all about flexibility and ownership. Because you own the account, it’s a long-term tool. You can use an HSA debit card right at the point of service or ask for a reimbursement. If you’re self-employed and meeting the requirements, this is a fantastic way to protect your health and your bottom line.

A Closer Look at the FSA

The FSA is a powerful upfront tool. Once you decide how much to contribute for the year, your employer makes that full amount available to you immediately! Just a heads-up: if you spend more than you've contributed so far and then leave your job, you may have to pay back the difference. Since it's a "reimbursement-style" plan, keep those receipts from your Junkyard rehab sessions!

  3. Get Reimbursed: We’ll provide the documentation you need to make sure your "Health Vault" covers your training!
