How Training Empowers Athletes with Disabilities
At Junkyard Training, everybody gets fit. But we understand that fitness isn’t just about reps, sets, and looking good in the mirror—though that’s a nice bonus. It’s about movement, empowerment, and breaking limits. And nothing proves that better than our work with athletes who have disabilities.
The Disabilities Group
We are humbled to be involved with our Special Olympics powerlifting group, where determination meets sheer grit. We compete in local Special Olympics meets as well as other organizations across the country. Right now, our group includes five incredible athletes—two autistic individuals and three amazing athletes with Down syndrome. And trust me, watching them push themselves is nothing short of inspiring.
Why Training Matters
Training isn’t just about building strength; it’s about unlocking potential. For those with disabilities, every lift, stretch, or mobility exercise is a step toward:
- Improved functional movement – making everyday tasks easier and more independent.
- Enhanced confidence – discovering “I can do this” in the gym translates to life outside the gym.
- Community & connection – our athletes thrive in an environment that celebrates every victory, big or small.
Expanding Horizons
Our mission doesn’t stop here. We’re passionate about continuing our work with athletes with disabilities, Paralympic hopefuls, and anyone whose movement is limited. Every person deserves access to strength, power, and the joy of moving their body freely.
Training at Junkyard isn’t just exercise—it’s empowerment in motion. Whether you’re lifting in the gym, moving through life, or breaking personal barriers, we’re here to make sure every athlete, regardless of ability, gets to feel strong, capable, and unstoppable.
