Crush Your PRs, Not Your Joints When Powerlifting

If you’re anything like us, you live for the rush of chalking up your hands, setting your stance, and loading up the barbell for a heavy squat, bench, or deadlift. There is seriously nothing quite like the feeling of hitting a brand-new personal record!

But the truth is that building raw strength is an incredible journey, and staying in the game for the long haul means keeping safety front and center. Nobody wants an unexpected bench session with the physical therapist instead of the squat rack. To help you lift heavy, lift smart, and keep those gains coming safely, we have put together our top powerlifting safety tips straight from the Junkyard floor. Let us dive in!

Master the Warm-Up

We get it—you are eager to slap heavy plates on that bar and get to work. But treating your warm-up like an afterthought is a fast track to the sidelines.

  • Get warm: Spend 5 to 10 minutes getting your heart rate up with dynamic movements to lubricate your joints.
  • Ramp up: Never jump straight from your warm-up sets to your working max. Build up gradually with lighter weights to let your nervous system and muscle fibers adapt.

Lock In Your Form Before You Add the Heavy Plates

Ego lifting is the ultimate enemy of progress. Perfecting your technique with lighter weight ensures you build the right movement patterns and protect your spine and joints.

  • Brace your core: Think of creating a solid cylinder of strength before every single lift by breathing into your belly, not just your chest.
  • Keep a neutral spine: Whether you are pulling off the floor or squatting deep, keeping your spine aligned saves your lower back from unnecessary stress.

Know When to Use Spotters and Safety Racks

Powerlifting is a community sport for a reason—we look out for each other! Never hesitate to ask for a spot, especially when you are pushing into heavy or unfamiliar territory.

  • Set your pins: Training alone? Always set your squat safety arms and bench press safety pins to the correct height so you have a reliable backup plan.
  • Communicate clearly: If you have a spotter, make sure you both are on the same page about when you need a lift-off and whether you want help with forced reps.

Respect Your Recovery Days

Muscles do not actually grow in the gym; they grow when you are resting, eating right, and sleeping! Heavy powerlifting places a massive demand on your central nervous system.

  • Listen to your body: Soreness is normal, but sharp or lingering joint pain is a red flag. Give your body the downtime it needs to rebuild stronger.
  • Fuel up: Prioritize quality protein, complex carbs, and plenty of water to keep your engine running at its absolute best.

Keep Lifting Strong!

At Junkyard Training, we are all about pushing your limits while building a strong, resilient body that lasts a lifetime. Take pride in your progress, respect the barbell, and never be afraid to ask our coaches if you want a second set of eyes on your form. Now the only thing left to do is go crush those workouts!
